Semi-Empirical Approach and Radar Polarimetry for Vegetation Observation

چکیده
Assessment of soil and vegetation properties is one of the main objectives of radar remote-sensing applications. The parameters of soil dielectric constant, crop height and extinction coefficient etc are very important for planning of earth resource utilization and the prediction of environmental changes. Although, a lot of work has been already done in this direction, no robust operational methodologies for estimating these parameters have been developed. In this paper an approach based on dual incidence angle and polarimetric data is proposed to assess crop parameters as well as crop covered ground parameters without any a priori knowledge of the field. The approach has been evaluated by simulated data and a good agreement has been obtained between assumed and simulated crop and crop covered parameters.

Polarimetric Analysis of Airborne Dlr-esar Data for Vegetation Characterization
Polarimetry is the measurement and interpretation of different polarizations of electro-magnetic waves. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has been proven to be a powerful earth observation tool and emerging Polarimetric SAR (POLSAR) adds another dimension to SAR information content. Polarimetric SAR has been used in retrieval of soil moisture and surface roughness, snow and ice mapping and land-co...
متن کاملSoil surface moisture estimation over a semi-arid region using ENVISAT ASAR radar data for soil evaporation evaluation
The present paper proposes a method for the evaluation of soil evaporation, using soil moisture estimations based on radar satellite measurements. We present firstly an approach for the estimation and monitoring of soil moisture in a semi-arid region in North Africa, using ENVISAT ASAR images, over two types of vegetation covers. The first mapping process is dedicated solely to the monitoring o...
متن کاملPotential of Mapping Soil Moisture by Combining Polsar Decomposition and Radar Backscatter Model
1. ABSTRACT Experiments undertaken in the 1970s demonstrated the sensitivity of radar backscatter to soil moisture conditions [1]. More recent advances in active microwave remote sensing have confirmed the potential for using current satellite data for the generation of soil moisture maps at different scales [2,3]. However, in addition to its strong sensitivity to the soil water content, radar ...
متن کاملBanded vegetation in some Australian semi-arid landscapes: 20 years of field observations to support the development and evaluation of numerical models of vegetation pattern evolution
Periodic vegetation patterns (PVPs) are striking features of many global drylands. Although they have attracted wide research study, resulting in many hypotheses, their origin and controlling factors remain unresolved. Theoretical works dominate a large literature seeking to account for the occurrence and properties of PVPs, especially banded vegetation patterns (‘tiger bush’). In light of...
متن کاملA General Model–based Polarimetric Decomposition Scheme for Vegetated Areas
A simple vegetation model for polarimetric covariance and coherency matrix elements is presented. The model aims to represent vegetation characteristics which are observable by radar polarimetry, including the average particle anisotropy, the main orientation of the volume, the degree of orientation randomness in the volume, and the terrain slopes. The decomposition consists, in analogy to the ...
